Some dogs have had a good home for years and suddenly find themselves without one. There's something special about helping a dog who has had a good home for years and suddenly finds itself uprooted and homeless through no fault of its own. It may have had a decent life, proper care and training for years and then dumped for some reason. Sometimes people simply did not realize the special qualities and demands of the breed or they have proven too big and strong for their owners who realize that a Malamute - or any dog - was a bad mistake. Sometimes divorce changes family situations, or owners did not understand the time and commitment involved in dog ownership. Owners who are moving or making major life changes are unable or unwilling to include a perfectly trained healthy house pet in their changed lives. Some dogs have simply been chained in back yards, given food and water, but deprived of attention and affection.  All of our Malamutes are altered before placement. They also have been given all necessary shots, rabies, wormed, are heartworm negative. Many rescue dogs show no signs whatsoever of abuse. In a few, the signs are unmistakable. A hand-shy or rear-shy dog expects to be hit and shies away from an outstretched hand. Some of these dogs cringe at the slightest word of correction. One of the pleasures of rescuing such a dog is the privilege of teaching the lesson that, from now on, human hands and voices mean kindness and love.Much of our work involves rescuing dogs, screening new homes, and matching available dogs to these homes.
